When I ask most girls what brand of make-up they wear - especially foundation - they always say MAC. Personally, I usually always wear MAC, from my foundation to eyebrow pencil, to my lipgloss. However, in the past, I have used Bobbi Brown foundation, which in my opinion is not in anyway obviously different in application or look.
So why is it that MAC seems to be deemed the Holy Grail of make-up, while Bobbi Brown is seemingly left by the wayside. Is it because the name reminds us of Whitney Houston's crackhead ex-husband? Lets analyse shall we girls?
Vs.
The first category to be analysed is price.
Comparing products:
- MAC's Studio Fix Liquid Foundation comes in at £19.50. Pretty affordable some might say, especially when Student Loan drops. Its probably triple the price of a foundation you could buy at Superdrug, but we all know MAC over Maybelline right?
- Bobbi Brown's Moisture Rich Liquid Foundation comes in at £27. So already, I'm starting to see why MAC is so popular. But, would we be right to assume that because this foundation is more expensive, it is therefore the better product?
VERDICT: MAC wins in terms of price, making it the ultimate choice for broke make-up whores such as myself.
Second category: variety of shades.
So personally when I visit MAC, I am literally overwhelmed by the amount of shades on offer. And also pretty pleased that they offer a variety of foundation shades for black skin; rather than offering a one shade fits all. When I've visited the Bobbi Brown section in department stores, I'm not struck by the shades on offer, they often seem neutral. More 30 year old bronzed goddess than 21 year old attention seeker. So I decided to visit the website to see if this was really true or if I was really just making it all up in my head.
- In terms of foundation, MAC offers their's in 32 shades. So its basically guaranteed that you'll find your near enough exact match for your skintone. They offer the basic lipstick in 128 shades and eye shadows are offered in 138 and in colours such as these:
Chrome Yellow £11.50 |
Electric Eel £11.50 |
- Bobbi Brown offer their liquid foundation in 15 shades. Already it would seem that they are keeping so many women from buying their products, simply because they do not produce enough shades. Their basic lipsticks come in 39 shades and their eyeshadows in 35 shades. And while in the lipsticks I can see many shades I love such as 'Black Rasberry', the eye shadows almost bored me to death. There is such a thing as death by beige eye shadow.
VERDICT: MAC wins hands down. If your the type of girl who like colours which pop, but in even more basic terms, if you're the kind of girl who likes an exact match with their foundation then it might be best to stay away from Bobbi Brown. For me, offering 15 shades doesn't cater to a nation filled with a couple hundred nationalities. Feel free to disagree.
Finally, I just wanted to talk about the 'WOW' factor. To be crude, which brand causes make-up orgasms? Which brand makes you want to starve for a week so you can buy whatever new shade that you don't really need but desperately want?
Bobbi Brown does not have the WOW factor. Take a look at the website for yourself.
Its actually coma inducing. A grey, black and white layout and the advertisement of the most boring eye shadow palette does not force me to part with my overdraft.
Check out the MAC website.
Its not exactly the best thing since sliced bread but at least they're using their imagination. MAC is also has a tradition of using celebrities to endorse their charity make-up line VIVA GLAM. Using, for example Lady Gaga.
If you had a product endorsed by Gaga (MAC) or one modelled by an unknown (Bobbi Brown)...which would you choose, even if the choice was subconscious.
I think what it comes down to is your personal make-up style. If what you go for is a subtle look and you have more money to spend then Bobbi Brown is for you. But for myself, and other females of my age, it seems as if MAC is the only way forward: not as expensive and caters to all.
MAC wins. Bobbi Brown loses.
I automatically started doing the speaking part at the end of 'Itty Bitty Piggy'. Please know what I'm talking about...lol
I tried to stay unbiased. I failed miserably.

Bobbi Brown and MAC aren't comparable. One is "makeup art" and the other is everyday/ every woman makeup. One is more beneficial to the skin and therefore more expensive. The other is for someone looking for a fun, bold look, and isn't yet concerned about moisture loss, wrinkles, and environmental damage to the skin. They as a brand and as a product are night and day.
ReplyDeleteBt those things u mentioned are the differences btn the products provided by the brands...if u feel u cnt say one wins ova the atha thts fine bt i dnt agree tht they cant be compared. They can...the are companies tht both sell skin care and make up of those arent comparable i dont know wat is.

DeleteThanks for looking up the facts and figures! Very helpful.
ReplyDeleteI love this post- I currently alternate between 4 different foundations- estee lauder double wear, mac studio fix, bobbi brown nourishing glow and mac pro long-wear. I love all of them for different reasons but one thing I LOVE about bobbi brown is that their lightest shade porcelain actually matches mine and that never happens plus its great for my sensitive skin! But on the other hand I love Mac studio Fix's full coverage, if only they could collab ;)
